However, there are some items that simply don’t belong in one of our—or any—storage unit.
#1: Scented Items
Any item that smells good (or bad) acts like a beacon for insects and other pests that could make their way inside the storage unit and take up residence. We suggest that you pack only items with neutral odours. Items to avoid include:
- Scented candles
- Cork
- Taxidermy
- Food items, even if unopened
- Water bottles
- Animal food/bird seed
If you absolutely must pack something that might smell good to a pest, make sure that it is completely sealed before sending into storage.
#2: Living Things
There have been many cases all over the world of people renting out storage units to live in. Not only is this illegal, it’s unsafe and unfit for living beings. This also extends to pets and plants. Storage units are no place for animals, and plants need fresh air and sunlight to survive. Besides, living things produce moisture and give off a scent , which we have already determined is a recipe for infestation.
#3: Hazardous Materials
Some people think of a storage unit as a garage. It’s not uncommon that people try to pack their cleaning products, pesticides, and car batteries; however, these items can be hazardous if spilled. Hazardous materials include anything that’s corrosive, flammable, and explosive. Any combination of these three can also damage property and potentially hurt someone. Common hazardous materials include:

- Motor oils
- Cleaning supplies

- Weed killers
- Alcohol

- Fireworks

Although our storage units are climate-controlled, we don’t suggest leaving anything in your unit that could potentially grow mould or mildew. That includes wet mops, damp sleeping bags, soil, sporting equipment, and food boxes. Our advice is to make sure all of your items are completely dried out before putting them into storage.
#5: Illegal Items
