About Montreal’s West Island
The city of Westmount is located on the island of Montreal on the western slope of Mount Royal. Founded in 1874, Westmount has become one of the most affluent & sought after residential areas within Montreal.
Even though the population is only appx 20k, it is one of the richest communities in all of Canada. As you move upward the along the slope of to the southern peak of Mount Royal the size & value of the residences increases dramatically. Past & current residents include prime ministers & politicians along with prominent authors, professors, entertainers, and athletes that have shaped Canadian history. Some of the most wealthiest families in Canada call Westmount as home.
Westmount offers primarily residential with abundant green spaces with multiple noteworthy educational centers, commercial centers including Westmount Square & Plaza Alexis Nihon, and at the same time being located directly adjacent to Montreal’s bustily downtown area.
Sports & recreation is offered at the various parks within the city, and new facilities at the renovated Westmount Recreation Centre which include two indoor ice rinks, swimming pool, tennis courts plus outdoor activities. The city is home to numerous sports teams and clubs including the Westmount Rugby Club (one of the oldest Rugby clubs in North America!).
The access to the community is easily attained by some of the primary major boulevards that service the downtown core of Montreal including Sherbrooke, du Maisonneuve, St Catherine, and Atwater. All off which provide access to highways 15 & 20 as well. Westmount is also connected to Montreal’s underground city network by the famous Metro subway system.
Westmount is also one of the primarily English speaking communities found on the island of Montreal – as of 2016 appx 69% of the population showed English as their first language. The bilingualism of the island being one of the most appealing aspects of Montreal for people moving from outside of the province.
Historically Westmount has given home to some of the most prominent figures in Quebec history, along with such highlights as offering the first public library in Quebec which opened in 1899. The rich architecture found throughout the community, like Victoria Hall, has led to a majority of the city being declared as a National Historic Site by Parks Canada in 2011.
