key Considerations When Moving from Canada to the US

When relocating across the border to one of the many vibrant American cities, your household goods and personal effects are permitted to enter the US duty-free. This applies if they have been in your possession and used by you for at least one year. For smaller shipments, consider using moving containers to simplify the process.

While it is not customary to charge duty on used personal goods, some goods such as vehicles may be dutiable. Check with the nearest U.S. Customs office/consulate in your area for specific information.

If you have any questions or concerns, and to get started on your moving process, contact our trusted and experienced long distance moving company today.

Regulations for Specific Items

Antiques

Antiques must be 100 years or older to be eligible for duty-free entry. Customs will require copies of the receipt or an appraisal as proof of antiquity.

Motorized Vehicles

Any motor vehicle (less than 25 years in age) must meet US safety and environmental standards to be imported into the US. A compliance letter must be obtained from the manufacturer stating the vehicle does meet all US EPA & DOT standards. The compliance letter is not required if it is a return of a US registered vehicle. Additionally, motorcycles must also meet specific US emission and safety standards. Some models, particularly “gray market” motorcycles manufactured overseas, may not be eligible for import.

If a compliance letter is unavailable, a Registered Importer may be required to assess or modify the vehicle to meet standards. A list of registered importers and compliance guidance is available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Association website.

Required Documentationfor Moving

To clear your household goods shipment through US Customs, the mover will require copies of the following documentation:

For Returning US Residents:

For Non-Residents:

  • Completed US Customs form 3299 form
  • Valid Passport
  • Work or Study Visa
  • Employment letter (if applicable)
  • Copy of I94, which is inserted in your passport upon entry

For Part-time Residents:

  • Completed US Customs form 3299 form
  • Proof of Property Ownership or Lease in US
  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Canadian residence: property deed, property tax records, utility bills, etc.

Ensuring a Smooth Border Crossing for Your Move

Customers do not need to be present when the van operator crosses the border, as long as all documentation is complete.

If you are not a returning US resident or newly approved permanent resident, you must enter the United States before your shipment arrives. Those on a work or student visa must complete the immigration process to establish their status. Once confirmed, customs will issue an I-94 document, which must be provided to the moving company to approve the shipment.

To prevent any issues at the border, we ensure you all the necessary documentation for your international move.

Avoiding Common PitfallsDuring your Move

The Importance of Proper Documentation

Having the correct paperwork is critical when relocating to the US. This includes a valid I-94 document, your passport, a signed Form 3299, visa information, proof that you are authorized to work in the US, required application forms and declaration forms, and any necessary approval documents for your personal property. Accurate and organized documentation ensures you can avoid delays with customs officials and helps make your move a straightforward process.
