Long-distance moving within, out of, or to Canada is a major expense. After all, you are moving thousands of pounds of furniture thousands of kilometres, sometimes across rough terrain and international borders. There are plenty of “tips” on how to save on moving day, but most are just your average money-saving advice. We’ve got three tips for you that only the insiders will know.

If you’re looking to save a few bucks on moving day, here are three ways to do it. Number three might even be something you had no idea existed!

#1 – Cut Down Weight Instead of Things

Long-distance moving costs are based on weight more than anything. Most tips tell you to get rid of things you don’t need by having a yard sale or donating. That’s a great idea, but the biggest benefit will come from getting rid of heavy items. For example, you are better off donating your collection of books to a local school or cutting down on big furniture than you are donating clothing or blankets. Consider items that are easy to get in other locations like a couch with a fold out bed or a chair.

#2 – Move Mid-Month (and Off-Peak!)

Want to know a hidden factor in moving costs? Leases! It’s true. Most leases kick in at the start of the month, meaning more people are moving around the end of the month or beginning of the next. More demand means higher rates. If you can schedule your move during the middle of the month, you’ll most likely get the best rates. Also, we’ve covered it before, but moving in the autumn or winter (especially winter!) is off-peak, meaning the prices will be even lower.

#3 – Use CRA Tax Breaks

Many of our clients are surprised to find out that their moving expenses could be tax deductible. For example, if you’re moving to start a business or go to school, expenses such as meals, gas, and moving costs can be deducted. Of course, restrictions apply and the tax code is complex, so speak with a professional to know for sure. The CRA’s website lays out the tax implications of a move in detail. If your new home is at least 40km closer to your work/school, your expenses will usually qualify.
